How Yoga Saved My Life

Everything comes to you at the right time. 🕊 This holds true for yoga.

For the past 10 years, yoga has always been a foundation of unconditional love. Gentle, steady, and strong, always allowing my loyal butterfly spirit to come and go as I please. It provides me with a quiet space to be fully present while I transform into the women I am truly grateful to see in my reflection.

When I first began practicing yoga , I was completely devastated. My father’s sudden and unexpected death at a very young age left me traumatized. On March 25, 2012, I received a call from the African Embassy. My father had taken his final breathe. Thankfully, he went peacefully. But as for me, I was left behind in a million pieces. We had planned for me to visit, with the intention of seeing Victoria Falls, skydiving, and cage diving with great white sharks. Not only was that promised trip a reminder that not everything is guaranteed. My best friend was forever gone.

In addition to grieving, coping with depression, anxiety, and abandonment issues I also encountered terrifying thoughts that life would be better on the other side beside my dad. My nervous system was beyond shot.

It is unclear what led me to that LA yoga studio at 5 am that particular morning. Probably Daddy, but I do know I am forever grateful! That day, I began attending 5am and 7pm class. Slowly but surely, my nervous system began to mellow out and gain a steady, calm sense of clarity. I was then able to begin putting my life together logically instead of reacting emotionally. Being a highly emotional yet logical person, this was a beautiful blessing.

Once I worked through the trauma. Yoga became my happy place, and it remains so today. Providing moments for self-discovery, development, and awareness, yoga began to transform me physically, mentally, and emotionally. It enabled me to connect to my feminine energy, build confidence, and strengthen myself by grounding myself around my true self.

It has been an honor to be supported, encouraged, and assisted by the yoga community in Los Angeles, New York, Dallas, Charlotte, and Knoxville in my personal development. You will find the people in the studio to be so genuine and kind. Each individual is completely focused on their own personal practice on the mat, therefore, there is no peer performance pressure at all, which in turn allows for a more open exploration of various postures within a safe space. A few years ago, I came to realize that yoga is also a spiritual practice. While this is a highly personal area that I would like to keep private, we can all benefit from the experience if desired.

People always asked me, “Why are you running away to LA?” The truth is that I was never running away, I was simply coming HOME to myself. As a result of yoga’s unwavering love, I was able to accomplish this. I will always have a special place in my heart for yoga and the yoga community. The light in me sees and honors the light in you! Namaste!
